Common Name(s):

Spanish Porgy, Shiner, Sargo, Chopo Sina

Description:

Pinfish are oval and compressed. They are silvery overall with bluish sides and yellow stripes and 5 to 6 faint dusky bars. They have a dark patch just behind the gill cover and their fins are yellow.

Feeding Habits:

Shrimp and other smaller fish.

Range:

From Cape Cod south along coast to Yucatan, Mexico; possibly including North Cuba.

Habitat:

Small Pinfish swarm over inshore grass flats in warm or temperate weather, retreating to deeper water with dropping temperatures. They also can be found around other cover, such as rocks and bars.

Typical Size:

Most Pinfish run 3 to 6 inches and may range as high as a pound or more.
